Thank god nobody was killed. And Thank god my CLS needed a new set of brake and my mechanic lent me his 328i E46 as my new DD until the CLS is ready to roll. Anyway, how much harm a volcanic dust can do to cars?

Kinja'd!!!

Other than Air filter obviously. Here's the beemer after driving trough the dust.

*PS: God i love my mechanic's car. It's really fun to drive, especially trough some slippery dust, so i can pull a little oppo.

If the car just sits there, engine off, the dust can't do much harm.

A running engine on the other hand... Volcanic ash tends to be really fine, so some of it will likely get past your air filter and it's really abbrasive.

If you have the luxury then wait it out. Let most of the ash be washed away by rain before you drive away.

Wash as much of that volcanic ash away and do your mechanic a favor and get a new air filter before you drive his e36. if you had a decent coat of wax on the car before the eruption you should be fine but I'd still wash and wax the car again. Just remember that pumice was the mechanics friend in getting that grease off and basically turning soap into an emery board for the hands. Glad you're okay.

Be safe. Volcanoes can be bad news. Follow the advise others have given about the car.

I was about 100 miles from Mount St Helens when it went off in 1980 and about 5 years old. That is enough to have freaked me out to this day.

Well, that's sound scary.

I'm now about 20 miles from the volcano, Mt. Kelud.

So far things has back to normal, but i don't know what tomorrow holds.

Its Friday morning was pretty much gonna play this anyway. Could be worse. Instead of living near a giant natural mount of dynamite that spews lava and silicosis inducing ash (amongst breath taking scenery btw), you could be a US southerner woefully unprepared for a few damn inches of snow.

Kinja'd!!!

Kudos that's a hell of a loaner and DD

One of the weirdest nights of my life was a few years ago. I was on a rooftop bar in Guatemala with some friends, we'd been drinking for a while, and I looked up at some point, and this mountain like 2 miles away is just spewing lava. So I raised the alarm, and we kind of grabbed our shit hastily, and the bartender's all, 'Hey, don't worry about it, it'll probably be fine.' So we stayed, because we had been having a nice time and we were too drunk to make wise decisions. Then there was ash falling like snow, and the bartender's all, 'Hey, don't worry about it, wear these bandanas over your nose.' So we did. Just hung out all damn night breathing ash, drinking Gallo, and watching the lava set shit on fire. It was bizarre.
